LOS CHICOS "IN THE AGE OF STUPIDITY" / KING SALAMI & THE CUMBERLAND 3 - "COOKIN' UP A PARTY"

NEW RELEASES

KING SALAMI & THE CUMBERLAND 3 - "COOKIN' UP A PARTY" CD - OTH 7126

It’s one of my regular rants, but the 21st Century really does suffer from a dearth of good, original R’n’B (no, not Rhianna, rhythm and blues you fools). I mean, the trad rockabilly circuit has got the classic rock n roll sounds covered, but where’s a boy supposed to go when he’s finished with Ray Charles and wants something with a bit more teeth?
Step in London’s King Salami and The Cumberland Three. Playing a potent blend of sausage-influenced gonzo rhythm and blues, fronted by the eponymous maraca brandishing King Salami, part manic Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, part Symarip-style gang leader, this is just the tonic for a world that’s forgotten how to dance.
Following up nicely where 2010s Fourteen Blazin’ Bangers left off, I suppose perhaps the extra-special ingredient in the King’s secret recipe, beyond the mans own charisma, is a big dash of punk energy from ex-members of The Parkinson’s, amongst others. Yeah, I didn’t see that one coming either. It’s not a direct musical link, but you can see some of that vibe soaking through in these two and a half minute blasts.

You could argue that maybe this is a bit of a 50s/60s Americana throwback, and yeah there is the odd knowing wink to the High School Dance et al, but really, good rhythm is timeless. Thoroughly recommended for anyone that likes to move their hips, click their fingers and swing, as well as just going a bit mental.

LOS CHICOS "IN THE AGE OF STUPIDITY" CD - OTH 7122

Beck, in a Spanish press conference, said: “Los Chicos are my favourite Spanish band.”

Los Chicos is a five-man rock’n’roll machine constructed from the best parts of all the best components of 20th century rock’n’roll and rythm’n’blues. They put the ingredients into the mix...and then kick the livin’ shite out of it! It's a sound that, on stage, explodes into a powerful and exhuberant rock'n'roll party.

Featuring a line up that makes the Cramps’ audience at Napa State look normal – a fast talking highclimbing frontman, a shaven-headed evil Doctor Pineapple, a bubble-permed bassist, and last but not least the only real twin guitar team treading the boards today, Spain’s best band gather new fans everywhere they go. It's your turn next!

For this, their fifth album, recorded in the summer heat of Madrid in four days and mixed in another three by Mike Mariconda, Los Chicos have collaborated with well-respected Spanish artistes such as Josele Santiago from Los Enemigos and Hendrik Röver from Los Deltonos.

There cannot be a more direct, more raw, less artificial recording available today. In the Spain of today this is the only way to deal with the problems, primarily economic, affecting Spanish society and the band members in particular: beer, good parties and much laughter. And this comes out in the recording, along with a dash of anger. And, in part thanks to the current climate, this may be the most powerful sound they’ve ever achieved.

KING SALAMI AND THE CUMBERLAND 3 - CAN YOUR MONKEY DO THE WURST CD

In 2006, one Japanese, one French, one Caribbean and one Spanish got together to form a black rhythm & blues party band!

London's newest R&B-punk sensation – okay, maybe our only R&B-punk outfit – are making fun times where ever they go. With a repertoire encompassing many of the greats of the '50s and '60s you won't be able to help but move your feet. The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail and with Andre Williams trying to offer up some of his bacon fat. This man never stops shakin' and twistin' and groovin' while the Cumberland 3 (former members of the Ulcers, Chinese Lungs and Parkinsons) play their own branded mix of vintage rockabilly desperate rock'n'roll and a bit of soul with fire, energy, gusto and fun!

They have played all over Europe, and more recently Japan & China, sharing the stage with the Pretty Things, the Trashmen, the Standells, the Mummies, the Bellrays, the Cynics, etc...and have released a bunch of killer 45's on different European record labels.

This CD release collects a bunch of their 7" tracks plus rarities and compilation tracks.

May news

G'day,

Thanks to everyone that got out to one (or more) of the LOS CHICOS
shows; what a fabulous party!! LOS CHICOS plan to return late 2013!!
and right now i'm booking shows for not one, but two touring bands due
here mid august: KING SALAMI AND THE CUMBERLAND 3 (UK) and JOHNNY
CASINO Y LOS SECRETOS- our man in sydney plus his spanish backing
band.

recent releases:
**THE HARD-ONS "SMELL MY FINGER" 2xCD - Citadel Records is proud to
announce a five part reissue series The Hard-Ons - A Decade Of Rock.
This definitive body of work will present the entire official recorded
output of The Hard-Ons' first ten years of existence with a new
reissue every three to four months.
Smell My Finger debuts the series. Spanning the years 1984 - 1987, it
contains all of the band's early 7 inch releases and the two 12 inch
album releases Smell My Finger and Hot For Your Love, Baby. Every
officially released Hard-Ons' tune from the period, down to the most
obscure compilation track, has been included. Adding interest to the
mix is some bizarre and fascinating live documentation from salvaged
party tapes and desk recordings.

**CRYSTAL THOMAS AND THE FLOWERS OF EVIL "A CHANCE IN HELL" CD -
Through unhinged guitar lines and intense brooding vocals, Crystal
Thomas is set to release 'A Chance n Hell' - Crystal's sophomore
album; written, recorded, and co-produced with Spencer P Jones and
Matt Walker, captures Crystal’s 'Australian-gothic', confessional
lyrics over a dark disco pulse and rock n roll swagger, raw against
the lush production of the previous offering – 2008 Stovepipe records
release.

**THE NO REAL NEED "NONLOCAL MOTIVES" CD - Nonlocal Motives is The No
Real Need’s second album, and is the first
document of the band as a four-piece. Recorded by Robert Pollard’s
right-hand man Todd Tobias at Waterloo Sound in the USA, and by Brent
Punshon at Melbourne’s Head Gap, it has more of a live feel than
2009’s Thistles Where We Slept; yet the addition of new voices has
only broadened the canvas for Steve’s idiosyncratic pop, which reaches
a little further out into space this time. The songs project richly
imagined, echo-laden nth dimensions, littered with metaphysical
musings and Jungian freak-outs. There are more layers, more
echo-tinged tangents than before, all coated in a sticky shared DNA
damaged as much by grunge as by tape delay. But the essential sound of
Steve’s operation remains: an odd blend of stiff-armed Colin
Newman-style experimentalism and buttery, harmonised pop. Probably
closer to the latter, much to the drummer’s chagrin. Cassette version
available in April on Do Your Block.

coming later this month for the off the hip record label:
**JOHNNY CASINO - SAMPLER CD featuring new recordings from Johnny's
many current projects; secrets album, johnny solo album, johnny y los
secretos, carrie philis and the downtown three 7", plus tracks from
his entire career. Who can stop this man??

**THE SINGLES CD - compilation from this early '80s sydney powerpop
band. contemporaries of LITTLE MURDERS and YOUNG MODERN.
